Updates to Google Analytics   2020

In 2020 Google updated from Universal Google Analytics 3 (UAxxxxx) to Google Analytics 4 (G-xxxxxxxxxx).

Universal Analytics refers to the previous generation of Google Analytics for measuring website traffic. If you set up Google Analytics for your website prior to October 14, 2020, you probably created a Universal Analytics property. Google Analytics now defaults to creating a GA4 Property.

Google Analytics 4 

Google Analytics 4 is now the default experience for new Google Analytics properties and where Google is investing for the future. Google Analytics 4 builds upon the features introduced in Google Analytics App+Web  and is an entirely new measurement model which provides a more unified analytics solution for better cross-device measurement. Key new benefits include:

    1. Understand customer journeys with cross device insights powered by Google Signals
    2. Privacy centric measurement with regulatory compliance and tools
    3. Google’s machine learning to predict customer actions
    4. Cross platform ads integrations and native data-driven attribution
    5. Google Cloud integration to enable data decisioning and prediction

Google Analytics 4 includes a number of new reports, structured around customer lifecycle (Acquisition, Engagement, Monetization, Retention) with the ability for marketers to understand return and activate their first party data in a compliant manner. 

What is the impact?

Google has no immediate plans to deprecate Universal Google Analytics. However,  Google Analytics 4 is the primary analytics product that is being invested in.

It is recommend that all organisations who use Google Analytics set up dual tagging so they can start collecting data and take advantage of new Google Analytics 4 features and capabilities.  Data collection for Google Analytics 4 starts from scratch and implementation can take time. Setting dual tagging up now will give you historical data to work with and greater ownership of a migration path.  

At this stage Google Analytics are still supporting Version 3 and updating to Version 4 is not mandatory.

However if you want to update: 

Sign into your Google Analytics Account.
Find "Upgrade to GA4" and create a new tracking code. (G-xxxxxxxxxx)
Email the code to us and we'll add it to your 'Main Site Details'. You can still keep your version 3 track number as well.

OR if you have access: Go to your site "www.yoursiteurl/admin"  and paste that Tracking ID Number into the Site Tools/ Edit Site/Google Analytics Number: box

Set up your/company Google Account, Google Analytics account, add a website/property to that account for your site.

If you don't do this, then you won't have any Google Data to view.

You have to do this at the beginning of the site going live to start collecting data.

STEP THREE:  You then add the website (property) to your Google Account/Analytics.

Setting up Analytics for a website (Universal Analytics)

NOTES:

You can have more than one Google account with up to 50 properties (websites) per account.

Google refers to a website as a property.

STEP ONE

Set up a Google Account.

Your email or your sites email has to be associated with a Google Account.

If you have already done this go to STEP TWO

STEP TWO

Create an Analytics account

Your first step is to set up an Analytics account.

If you have already done this go to STEP THREE

  1. In Admin Bottom Left (cog icon), in the Account column, click Create Account.
  2. Provide an account name. Configure the data-sharing settings to control which data you share with Google.
  3. Click Next to add the first property to the account.

 

STEP THREE

Create a property/website

  1. In Admin, Bottom Left (cog icon), look at the Account column to make sure that you've selected the right account. Then, in the Property column, click Create Property.
  2. Enter a name for the property (e.g. "My Business, Inc website") and select the reporting time zone and currency.
  3. Click Show advanced options
  4. Turn on the switch for Create a Universal Analytics property. 
  5. Enter the website URL.
  6. At this point, choose to create
    • Both a Google Analytics 4 property and a Universal Analytics property. This option
  7. Click Next and provide information about your business. 
  8. Click Create.

Accept the Analytics Terms of Service and the Data Processing Amendment if prompted, and click Finish.

STEP FOUR

Get your Tracking number or Measurement ID

Using a Universal Google Analytics 3

You have to already set up a Google Analytics Account to be able to do this. See STEP ONE

  1. Sign into you Google Analytics account and select your Property/Website
  2. Click Admin. Bottom Left (cog icon)
  3. In the Property column, click Property Settings.

Your “UA-” ID appears at the top of the Property Settings page.

Copy the number and send it to Fraser@flightdec.com

 

Using a Google Analytics 4 property? Find your Measurement ID (i.e. "G-" ID)?

Click Admin, bottom left (cog icon), make sure that you have the desired account and property selected.

In the Property column, click Data Streams, then click your web data stream. Your “G-” Measurement ID appears in the upper right portion of the panel. 

Copy the number and send it to Fraser@flightdec.com

Don't have Access to your Google Analytics Login?

  1. Get a hold of Google and/or use one of these options:
    https://support.google.com/analytics/troubleshooter/7264014?hl=en
    This would be the preferred option as it will give you back access, along with all the historical data.
  2. Lose the historical data and create a new one. 

 

INVALID GOOGLE ANALYTICS 

Warning on Assigned Sites in the Flightdec admin platform.

If this is displaying, hover over the red warning text and the tracking ID number should display. Check that against your tracking ID number in your Google Analytics account.

They should be the same. 

If not, copy the Google Analytics tracking ID number and contact admin@flightdec.com

OR if you have access: Go to your site "www.yoursiteurl/admin"  and paste the correct Tracking ID Number from your Google Account into the Flightdec  Site Tools/ Edit Site/Google Analytics Number: box

How and where to check
Google Analytics
  1. Login to Google Analytics https://www.google.com/analytics/web/
    Use the email address that the account is under.
  2. Select the account under Analytic Accounts, select the property (your site)
  3. Find your Tacking ID Number.
  4. Quit out 
Flightdec Admin

Go to your site "www.yoursiteurl/admin"  and hover over the red warning message, the number should display or go the Site Tools/ Edit Site/Google Analytics Number: check the number is the same.

 

 

Share or Follow icons

Do you want to display Share or Follow icons on your website?

The following are basic instructions for using the AddThis site.

First consider what you want these icons to do and where and how you want them to be displayed on your website.

To consider:

1.   

Share or Follow icons?

(You can have both and even more options on the one site.)

2. 

Icons on every page or just certain pages?

3. 

Customise the look and position and even what icons you want to appear.

   

How to use AddThis 

1. Sign up to AddThis

You can have more than one website under your Login, websites are referred to as profiles.

2. Select the Dashboard Button

This will take you to the area where you add and access your websites

3. Add a Profile ( your website )

See top left menu: My Site click on the red plus icon, click onto Add Profile

Name your Profile and fill out any profile settings eg collaborators

Go to Tools in the menu

Use Add New Tool button to select the type of tools you want

Decide what type of Tools (social media icons) you want and what you want them to do.
You can go back and change these tools any time you like under settings.

Select a Tool eg Share buttons

Select Tool Type Select Continue

For Share icons: Style and customise your tools using choices of  Sharing Services, Design, Share Counter, Position and Behavior
For Follow icons: Style and customise your tools using choices of Follow Services, Design, Position and Behavior

Activate your tools, you must do this for your tools to show

4. Get the Code

Go to "Get the code" in your menu. The code should look something like the following:

Copy it.

 

Now decide what pages in your site you want the icons to appear:

ON ALL PAGES

If you want the icons to appear on all pages email this code to yvonne@flightdec.com Let her know that you want it to appear on all pages.

Click on the menu item "Site Theme Edit"/template.

Paste the code right above the closing </body> of the HTML in your website on every page you want AddThis to work.

ON BLOG, EVENT OR NEWS PAGES ONLY

If you want the icons to appear on all Blog pages, Event pages or News pages etc

  • Go to the Index page that has been set up to receive the Blogs, Events or News posts etc;

  • Go: 'Add-on Modules' (blue button, upper right);

  • Under 'Module Index'/'Display a Share Toolbar' paste the code in the 'HTML' dialogue box.

  • This will then automatically add it to each post assigned to it.

 

ON SELECTED PAGES ONLY

If you want the icons to appear on a selected page only:

  1. Go to the page that you want it to appear on;
  2. Go: 'Extra Feature' in the menu below the content buttons;
  3. Under 'Style & Functionality'/'Page Body Tags:' paste the code in the dialogue box.
 
 

What is AddThis?

AddThis is a social sharing tool that appears on a lot of websites.

It is often displayed as a "share" button that expands to show a vast array of sharing options.

What information does AddThis track?

It collects non-personal information in the form of web analytics.

Is the data ever matched to personally identifiable information?

The personal and non-personal information are never matched, says AddThis.
